The Swinging City

In April 1966, a Time Magazine correspondent Piri Halasz published an article celebrating contemporary London. In an excerpt from the article: "In a decade dominated by youth, London has burst into bloom. It swings; it is the scene...The city is alive with birds (girls) and 'beatles', buzzing with mini cars and telly stars, pulsing with half a dozen veins of excitement."
The fashion scene in London was centered around Chelsea's Kings Road, until Biba opened in Kensington.

this was exactly the topic of my dissertation for uni this year! it was called 'Dressed like Kaleidoscopes: How the boutique made London swing' I know that article (and most of these pictures) back to front by now. you did have some images I haven't seen though, so thanks for posting! I'm fascinated with London at this period. it's also the inspiration for my grad collection.

Now, this is an AWESOME post! I collect for a long time 60's pics, and some of you have posted were rare to me! London is probably the most incredible to have been in the 60's with maybe California at this time. Thank's for this amazing post, I just adore your blog. :D

There has never been anything as intense and beautiful, full of vitality. I was too young to dress like that, but read all the mads cover to cover.

Biba was and is my favorite of it all. Everyone was and wanted to be so different unlike the cookie cutter barfie dolls plastered all over the place. And oddly, no one was concerned about their weight, just self expression.

Rage on and let's turn back the clock to self invention/expression as art.

I just want to thank you so much for this blog! For all the time and effort you must put into scanning all the pictures, and for having such beautiful photos!
This blog really captures the beauty, creativity and power of the 60s and every picture is a delight to see (even though they all make me so sad I wasn't there...)
Thank you so much and keep it up! :)

Hi, I see you used two of my Chrissie Shrimpton photos from my old Tiger Beat Magazine when Chrissie was writing for the column "From London With Luv". They were her shopping on Portobello Road, and the other was with Michael Rainey from Hung on You. You must have got them off of minimadmod60s. I have some great ones of Linda Keith, Keith Richards ex girlfriend from my 16 Magazines. I have some great stuff from all my old magazines You should also do something on the Walker Brothers, I have some great photos.
